She said I can see that he replied and theninvited her in while Hans Ha prepared a spot of TeaDash, sat at the kitchen table with a...

...towel spread beneath her chair to catchthe drips before they reached the floor. Why were you outside if it's raining sohard Hans asked? Well, Dad was showing me the best wayfor us to get to the woods he's up in the Bell Tower to day fixing someboards. He took me up to the roof to point out the root we should take. Didn't you know it was going to startraining. My whiskers always tingle and my first tands on end right beforedownpour. Oh, I could tell so could dad too. Hetook shelter and flicker's coop when the first drops fell, and I almost madeit in almost hum mm. You waited till it started, raining, didn't you, oh maybe she said Dash's mischievous smile gave her away. Unlike most mice, Dash Likt, water andHanse knew that if she was soaking wet as she was, it was because she wantedto be Hans, a replaced. The now drenchedtowel beneath Dash with a fresh one, I tried convincing him. We could stillhike in the rain, but dad insists that we stay inside. I'm sorry Hanza, I knowyou've been looking forward to getting out of the city for the day. Hansa dropped his voice and stretchedhis words out as long as possible, trying to sound very disappointed. That's all right, despite being a field mouse who waswell used to getting caught out in a summer, storm Hansa did not likegetting wet getting into the countryside had beenon his mind for weeks now, but he was not sad to miss out on the rain. Dash ran back to her house to changeout of her wet clothes. While Hansa got...

...a small fire started in the wood stovein the corner. The wind and rain continued to pound the two young mice contented themselvesto spend the day playing games, reading books and watching the downbor outsidehis little window. It is universally accepted that miceknow the best games, Hansa taught dash a few card games,he'd learned growing up. He won speed card twice and dash onceand dashbeat him at slakjack three times in a row before Hanse suggestedthey switched to reading Dath, lay on her back on Hansa's bedwith her feet, high up on the wall and used her tail to turn the pages. Soon she was whisked away to a distantland where she wore a detective's hat and solved spooky mysteries. Detective Leuis stories were her.Favorites Hansa, on the other hand, chose aclassic story with his grandfather. He had read acountry mouse h's tail dozens of times he sat sideways in his favouritereading, chair with his legs resting over one arm and his tail hanging overthe other. He love the part where country mouse floats down the river ona piece of dried up. Driftwood Tahanza countrymou stories were like a manualfor life, just as he turned the page to hisfavourite part: a drop of water splashed on top of him, hansesscrunched up his forehead and scanned the boards above him. Looking for thesource, but there was nothing he reopened his book and started again spash another drop splashed him right acrossthe face, then another,...

...then another. The drops were gettingbigger and bigger. Hansa jumped from his reading chair andstood back with his hands on his hips Dash. Looked up from her book. It wasn't difficult now, as the steadystream of droplets were flowing through a tiny hole. A small puddle was forming on the chair, Dash, ran to the kitchen and grabbedthe biggest boll. She could find she set it under the Stream, whileHansa scried up the back of his chair and teetered on one foot, as hestretched up to stop the leak with his finger. What do you think asked ash? We could patch this up with somechewing gum, Hansa answered. There are a couple small pieces in that tin. Nextto the sink. He pointed his outstretched tailtowards the kitchen dash found the tin popped, a piece inher mouth and chewed as fast as she could. She then stretched it out of her mouthand flattened it with her fingers. She climbed onto the chair, cushion andstood on the tips of her toes holding it above her head. Hans, had grabbed the gum with his tailand held it up to the hole and used his fingers to press down the edges to sealit. That should do it. He said with a grin water dripping from his whiskers. He hopped down from the chair and examined his work. The leak had stopped Dash handed him a small yellow, towelshe'd found, I feel, like I've, been floating downthe river with country mouse. He said the leak dealt with the two miceresumed. Their reading dash took up her spot on the bed, whileHansa stretched out in front of the wood stove to dry out. He propped hishead up with a pillow and began reading again...

...country mouse, climbed aboard thedriftwood boat and used a small branch to push himself off into the stream. Hecould soon dash yelled out Hans Afe the gum both mice leaped towards the chair, agiant pink bubble, was forming beneath the leak. It was filling with water just as dash got to the top and reachedup the bubble exploded. It sprayed water over everything in the room, soaking, Hansa and ash water gushed out of the hole, adash shoved, the gum back into thehole and stood there holding in place. Where is the water coming from yelledHansa over the rushing sound of water? I don't know, but I think we made itworse. We need help I'll hold this here. You Run and get my dad. Hansa didn't wait for more instructions. He moved as quickly as his legs would carry him. If he didn't get help fast, his wholehome would be ruined in a flood. He first ran to dash his home. Herlittle brother Martin opened the door. Martin is Mister shorttail here nope, but mom is said. The little boy tell her that dash needs her help. She's at my house, he ran back through the passageway. That Morning Dash had said her dad wasfixing some boards on the belltower roof Hansas shot up the ladder, taking therungs too, at a time when he got to the top. There was no one there think said, Hansa to himself think what came a voice behind him. Itwas flicker. Thank think, think. Is that all you must do. You should tryplaying some time. It's much more fun than thinking yes, Hansa thought to himself Mistershorttail was taking shell through a...

...flipper. Flicker is Mister shorttailstill with you, flicker held his mouth open in surprise, wow, that's ome! Good thinking is he Hans asked again flicker lifted his wings and lookedbeneath nope he's not under there Ha do you know where he is he's at my house. He fell asleep. As I was telling him my best squirrel story that mouse cansleep through anything. Do you know the one about CrookedMicnutton? Sorry you'll have to tell me later. He quickly told the bird hissituation. Well, we better get to him. Then no wonder you have no time for MCnutton. You can't mess with leags. My mother had a leak once it ruined hersinging voice for life. Mister shorttail was laying across abad of Straw, snoring Hansa, bent down and shook him gentlymister shorttail. What who's that Hansa asked the mouse? Yes, it looks like you've been outside too.Did it dash tell you that I didn't think it a good idea to go out to dayby the look of you. It's raining too hard to be outside it's raining inside now. The rain ispouring through my ceiling and and Hansa stopped to catch his breath, andif you don't come with me right away, I'm not going to have much of a homeleft. Mister shorttail dropped his hammerinto his tool belt, grabbed his jacket and quickly followed Hansa down theladder when they reached Hans's house Missusshorttail was standing on a kitchen stool stacked on a chair with dash onthe back of the reading chair, both trying their best to keep another gumbubble from bursting mister shorttail jumped in action.

We need to find where the water iscoming in from so we can stop it at its source. Follow me Hansa. The ladies canonly hold Lak back a little longer, we'd, better hurry, Hansa, followed Mister shorttail backinto the main passageway. Many mice were now standing outside their homes, whispering about what might be happening. Mister shorttail stopped totalk to an older white mouse with a purple shawl on her shoulders. It wasMissus Maizie, the old widow mouse who shared a common wall with Hansas Home Maggie Hansa sealing as sprung a leak. Can we go out through your kitchen window? I think we might be able to seewhere the waters coming from. Of course, of course, Jasper just becareful on the ledge, Miss Maisie, replied, Mister shorttail flew throughMissus maisie's, open door and headed straight for her kitchen. Hansa hadonly been in her kitchen once before when she invited him over for tea. Soonafter he arrived at the tower, Miss Maizie had helped him find curtains forhis windows and a cover for his bed. She often brought chocolate, swets andtasty loaves of bread over for Hanza Mister shorttail, climbed on to hercountertop and threw the window above her sink. He was careful not to knockover any of her fine dishes and teapots with his tail. Just outside the window was a smallledge formed from a brick in the tower wall that was pushed out ever soslightly. It was common for the tower mice toadjust bricks in the walls of their homes, to create ledges or shelves tohave some place to put small plants in such Hansa, stood on the kitchen counter andheld tight to the window's frame with one arm while gripping tightly toMister shorttail's tail with the other. The rain beat hard against the openwindow. Panes Hansa's sleeve was...

...drenched, as was mister shorttail'sentire body. I found it called Mister shorttail Tohansa, there's a boardstuck between two bricks. Just above your house, it looks like one of theboards you and dash broke last week, the ones I was up fixing to day it musthave goten wedge there when it fell, rain drops, are falling on it andflowing into the space above your ceiling. Are you able to reach it? Idon't think so. Mister shorttail reached up as far as he could. He wasjust too short. He turned towards Hansa and tried his tail. Still too short. Ican't get it Hansa pulled him in through the window.Missus Maizie had joined them in the meantime you know Miss Mayzie began.Hansa is much taller than you Jasper, Mister shorttail's ears, porked upstraight. He is You'are at least a head taller than me. Two heads Miss maisiecorrected yes, yes much taller. If I held you tight, do you think you couldreach and Jiggle the board out from between those bricks? Hansa was sure that he could. He wasknown for his climbing skills, but the thought of hanging outside theclocktower high above the ground shook his nerves. He took in a deep breath and pushed his feelings aside. I thinkI could Hansa and Mister shorttail returned tothe kitchen counter missus Maizie, held on to Mistershorttail's legs for extra support. The rain whipped Hans in the face, as heedged out the window on to the Ledge. It was coming down. Fierce okay, Mistershorttail Hansa stretched out on to the tips ofhis toes. He could almost reach it. I'm going to try something ANSA yelled out. He turned towards Mister shorttailpushed both of his feet, hard into the...

...window's frame and climbed a littlehigher. He stretched his tail up and could justwrap it around the board. I've got it. Okay, now just wriggle it back andforth. Until it comes loose Hans at Dayd, just as Mister shorttailinstructed he rocked the board back and forth with each turn. It came slightlylooser until finally hit broke. Free Hansa stepped down from the Frame untothe Ledge holding the board tightly in his tail. Mister shorttail helped himback through the window and gave him an approving nod. When the three mices returned to Hansshome, they found Missus, shorttail and dash soaked through the fur to the bone, trying their best to keep the leak contained. Smaller Leagues had sprungaround the original hall. Every free finger, tow or tail was plugging asmany holes as possible. We stopped the flow mister shorttailtold his wife. Oh well done sweetheart. Now. What do we do about the water?Still here? Wait here, Mister shorttail answered turning and running back intothe passageway. A few moments later he returned holding a plastic Straw abovehis head. This should work. I saw it of flickers coop that bird keepseverything he finds carefully positioning the Straw justbelow the original hole. Mister shorttail stuck the other end out,Hans's, now open window all right dash on three. I want you tohop down and let go of the gum, I'll push this into the hole and will drainthe water straight outside genius. Miss Shorttale, exclaimed, blushing, Mister shorttail called outone two, three Dash: let go of the gum and jump down from the chair. Mistershorttail did just, as he had said, and...

...soon the water was flowing through theStraw and out the window with all the help it didn't take. Longto mop up the water in Hans's house, missus Maizie came with biscuits andtea when the cleanup ended. Thank you for all your help. You savedmy home Ransa said Mister shorttail promised to return the following day topatch up the space between the bricks and rebuild Hansa ceiling with freshboards. Just as dash was about to leave, sheturned to Hans with the same mischievous grin from the morning. It's too bad.
