The mice live off a food they find onthe streets or in the trash binds in the spring and summer when thousandsof people eat at street side. Restaurants, scrounging is easy, andevery mouse in the tower fills their pantries with suits and meats and bitsof bread. They dry out fruits and vegetables tokeep them fed through the winter months.

Planning in preparation are veryimportant to mice. For once the snow covers the streets, people move indoors to eat and a mouse's cupboard becomes much harder tofill. We have half a crust of bread. Just abit of potato and a sliver of Deli Meat said Missus shorttail as she pulled theingredients from her cupboard. Does that mean wert having soup again asked Dash as she leaned back on thesmall wooden spool? Yes, Daryia we are having soup againand but dash did not let her mother finish and we should be thankful for what wehave. I am thankful, and I love your soup, it's just after having me andpotato soup for eight days in a row. Something different would be nice right,Hansa, I'm just happy. I get to have supperwith all of you again answered Hanza. My cupboard is bare the Short Tales Treated Hanza as partof their family. He and dash were rarely apart. So this made sense. Mister shorttail, who was reading thesmall corner of a newspaper, he'd, found outside the tower set his paperdown and stood up. Well, you don't have to worry dash. He said Dash scrunched up her eyebrows at herfather. Why not? She said Mister shorttail reached over and grabbed thesliver of Deli meat from the counter. He stuffed it into his mouth and thensaid: Wor Josh, havering, Partrido Shup dash immediately responded gradesomething different and everyone laughed when all the soup was gone. Hansa anddash took care of washing the dishes. The short tails home was bigger thanHanzas, whereas Hans's entire home was...

...one large room. Theirs had severalrooms, their kitchen was complete with a woodstove mister shorttail built for Missus shorttail when they were married. There was a large rectangular tablemade from the bottom of a sardine can turned over and held up by four blocksof wood. Each chair surrounding the table was made of something different:a spool of thread, a plastic pencap with a bottle top for a seat. Whor achair, Mister Shorthail, had fashioned together with bits of wood. Mister shorttail began. Reading thepaper again, it says here the green grocers over onFifth Street is having a sail on carrots, or at least it was a coupledays ago. If we had it over there, maybe we can get some left overvegetables will they have oranges, asked Ash. IMiss Oranges. Mister shorttail responded. Well, Idon't know it just depends on what they've thrown out and, of course,we're not the only one scrounging for food possums, squirrels, even cats, butif nothing else, they ere almost always be pieces of bread. Martin Dash H's little brother spoke upI'll, find you some oranges, don't worry, I'm sure there'll be hundreds ofthem. Dash handed Hans Ot, the last boll todry and then turned towards her brother. Thanks with all of us, we should beable to get a lot of good stuff, Mister shorttail stared over the paperat his wife Daria. Normally we would need you.MISSUS shorttail began you're the best scrounder in the family, at least whenyou're not getting stuck in trashbins, but we need Jos stay at the tower whenwe go out to morrow.

Mister shorttail took it over fromthere. Benjamin Brownfur went to the countryto take care of his sick brother. Well, he got a message to Miss Susan, hiswife, that he can't make the journey back until after the snow thaws out abit. It's just not safe to be travelling long distances right now, dash looked at Hansa, then back at herfather. But why do I have to stay at the tower?Just because Mister Brownfur can't make it back? MISSUS shorttail took over Miss Susan needs to come gather with usto morrow to feed her family. That means some one needs to watch overher three children. Dash's mouth fell open. You don't mean some one. Do you? Youmean me all three mice Munchkins by myself. Thelast time I watched them, Simon and Olivia got glitter and paint all overthe house. The time before that Teddy wouldn't stop crying until his parentscame back, I'm not good at watching them. Mister shorttail, just smiled at hisdaughter, see you have experience with them plusthey love. You love me. If by love you mean they loveto bother me, then sure they're bonkers. For me, she paused for a moment. Can I at leasttake Hansa with me. You know for backup Mister shorthail looked at his wife andshrugged Honza. That decision is up to you. Youare welcome to go on the gathering trip with us, but if you decide you want tohelp dash, we will gather for you dash looked pleadingly at Hansa. Hecould see the begging in her eyes. I think it 'd be all right. Three kids should be no problem. Ifthere's two of us later that night Hansa had a difficulttime falling asleep,...

...he wondered if he'd do oka as a mouseminder. He never once taken care of a younger mouse. Unlike Dash and Martin, he lived byhimself, but it couldn't be that hard. HeThought Dash met Hanza the next morning at themarket square near the centere of the village. Whatever you do, don't let them getinto the glitter missus Brown first hall was on one ofthe upper levels of the passageway. It was a small but very tidy home. Thesmell of warm porridge hung heavily in the air good morning. Oh come in. Please comein. Thank you dash for staying with the kids. Today they were so excited. WhenI told them you were coming that they couldn't go to sleep, Missus Brownfur turned to Hanza. Youmust be Hansa. Cynthia shorttail told me all about you, it's nice to meet you finally wait here.Children come please. She called out. Suddenly three small mice burst intothe room and immediately climbed all overdash. It's nice to see you too dash calledout. Missus brownfor took that as her q toleave, we will only be a few streets over, butif you need anything, you can call on Miss Maggie for help. I let her knowthat you'll be watching the little ones to day and don't forget, keep a closeeye on teddy. He likes to get into mischief as the door shut behind. Miss Brownfor Dash, took a deep breath in and thenturned to the kids. What shall we do? First? They all responded at once: Arts andcrafts, not that glitter in paints again moanedash...

...we could play outside said Simon. Hewas the biggest of the three we haven't been out at all since dad went to takecare of Uncle Hansa just shook his head. We didn't ask if it's all right to gooutside today, so why don't we do something inside? Do you have anypuzzles puzzles are a favorite pastime of allmouse children, but mouse puzzles and people puzzles are very different andnever were two mouse puzzles the same. Each was drawn out by a parent or olderchild on BITs and pieces of spare cardboard and then cut into shapes thatlinked together we had a puzzle but teddy tore it intopieces, said Olivia. She was the second in age. This gave dash an idea. We could help you make a new puzzle. Yes said the children I'll get the paints said Simon. I'vegot the glitter said, Olivia Whitter said Teddy the best he could holdinghis fists in the air. Like he won a contest. Wait wait, there's only onerule: we can make a puzzle, but we can't use paints or glitter said Ash. Thankfully, there were many bits ofCrayon they could use. Instead, Olivia drew a picture of a fairy mousewith sparkling wings and a magic wand. It was just like the ones in thestories her mother told Simon added a picture of a ship sailingacross the sea, the great blue water spashed over theside of the ship. He drew a little pile of gold coins in one corner, they're going to find treasure. He toldHansa Teddy, however, felt the bit ofcardboard was too tasty to waste on a...

...drawing. He Lai I on his stomachnibbling on the corner of a piece. While they drew circles on the floor by the time dash and notice, hiscircles had turned to lines speeding up the nearest wall while dash scrubbed the crayon offHansa cut the puzzle pieces out. First, he laid the different bits of cardboardout on the table. He then drew a very light. Zig zaggingline all around the picture so that when he cut it the pieces would fittogether. He and ash cut out their pictures too. Hansa had drawn the little whitecottage where he grew up in the country. With his grandfather, there was an oaktree growing tall behind it and a little stream gurgling beside it dash drew a picture a flicker. He was a pigeon and a very specialfriend in her drawing. She rode on his back. While he carried Hansa and oneclaw look Konza he's a carrier, pigeon dash laughed Hansa did not think it wasfunny. When the puzzle pieces were all cut out.Simon suggested they let teddy mix up the pieces. He does it all the timeanyways he said, but when Hansa tried to get teddy thepuzzle, they realized they had a very big problem. Teddy was gone, Hansa and dash began, searching underall the furniture in the cupboards under the tables in the curtains everywhere they thought they might finda chubby little mouse, hiding no teddy any lock dashed asked Hansa. No, Ilooked all over the kitchen, even in the pantry he's not in the bedroomeither. Where could he be Dash, paused and thought? Maybe Olivia and Simon know where heusually hides...

...when she asked them. They both justshook their heads. He is the best hider in the family. Hemust think we're playing hide and seek he'll keep hiding until he's the lastone found once again dash was inspired. Okay, here's what we will do, let's pretend we really are playinghide and seek you. Each go hide and I will find you and then we will pretendwe can't find teddy and ask him to come out because he is the winner. The only difference thought DAS. Asthat we're not pretending. We have no idea where he is dash, stood with her nose to the walland started to count to twenty slowly one. She yelled out Simon, ran into the kitchen and hid ina cupboard. It would have been a good spot too. If his tail wasn't stickingout the door gotcha yelled Dash Simon, gave her awink and then in his best acting voice, said. Ah Man. I thought that was theperfect spot. Olivia had buried herself deep underthe covers on her bed. Still she formed a little mountain withher back sticking up in the air dash slowly approached the bed. What'sthis mountain doing on Olivia's bed, there should be no mountains in thehouse, then she grabbed the Little Hill and tickled it until Olivia, squealed nat just left Teddy and Hansa. Wheredid Hans a hide, asked Olivia Dash wore a puzzled look on her face. I don't know I forgot to ask him just then they heard a small at CEU. Did you hear that listen said Simon again, someone sneezed. It sounded like a small, some one. Allthree mice got down on their hands and...

...knees and peered under Olivia's bed. There was teddy. He was lying on hisbelly and sneezing from all the dust he wore a wide grin on his face. We found you teddy, they all said, smiling you're a good hider dash added once teddy was found. The game was over Dash called out to Hanza all right Hansa. You can come out now,but there was no reply. Each of the children tried calling tohim even Teddy, called out Hannah Haana, but still nothing. I guess we're justgoing to have do. Search for EM said Dash. They looked under the bed in thecurtains and under the kitchen table, but no matter where they looked, theycouldn't find Hansa. Simon and Olivia both searched theirbedrooms while dash and teddy looked in the kitchen ind sitting room after nearly an hour of searching forhim dash heard the front door open, it was missus Brownfor Dash, Miss Brownford called out. Canyou help me with these? She carried two large basketfuls ofleftovers, dash grabbed one of the baskets andtook it to the kitchen table. Wow said Dash. This is a ton of food. Did my familyget this much more said, missus Brownfor and there'sa considerable amount for Hansa. Speaking of where is Hanza Dash, told missus Brown for about theirday about the puzzle and hide and seek do you think he laughed asked MissBrownfor? No, the door was still locked from theinside HM. That is very curious. Well help metake these baskets to the pantry and...

I'll help. You look for him. Dash grabbed hold of the basket again and followed Missus Brownfur towardsthe Pantry in the back of their home. Together, they unloaded three bits ofcarrot: some nuts, a portion of delimeat and a small chunk of chocolate. My husband will like that she said she took the piece of chocolate fromDash and opened one of the cupboards to put it away. Ah Ha, she said there squished into the cupboard withhis head, laying on an empty fruit.
